CarPlay: qué es y cómo funciona

CarPlay existe desde el año 2014, cuando Apple lanzó su producto para que formase parte de cualquier coche que lo requiriese. Para diciembre de 2016, esta versión de iOS está disponible en más de 200 modelos de coches. Si tu vehículo es compatible, permite adaptar tu smartphone para su uso durante la conducción. Muchos fabricantes utilizan CarPlay y en coches.com os vamos a contar por qué.

Activando CarPlay: paso a paso

Lo primero que necesitáis hacer para utilizar CarPlay es comprobar que vuestro iPhone es compatible. Lo será si tenéis alguno de los siguientes modelos: iPhone 5, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5C, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7 y iPhone 7 Plus. Además, vuestro sistema operativo debe ser iOS 7.1 o superior. En cualquiera de estos modelos deberíais ser capaces de actualizar a versiones superiores del sistema.

Para comprobar si cumplís este requisito, acceded a los Ajustes de vuestro iPhone. Buscad entonces la categoría General, haced click en Información y bajad hasta que encontréis el dato Versión. Si el número es 7.1 o superior, podréis utilizar CarPlay sin problemas. Si es inferior, tenéis un móvil Android o un Windows Phone, no podréis.

Siri, el asistente virtual de Apple, debe estar activada. Para ello, id a Ajustes, entrad en General y activadla bajo la categoría Siri. Dado el control por comandos de voz, desde Apple obligan a su uso. Además de esta opción, podrás usar la pantalla táctil o botones físicos para manejar CarPlay.

No necesitáis instalar ninguna app, ni parece que entre en los planes de futuro de Apple ofrecer algo así. CarPlay es una opción dentro de vuestro iPhone, a cuya configuración podréis acceder yendo a Ajustes, entrando en la categoría General y buscando el apartado de CarPlay.

Cómo utilizar CarPlay

A partir de aquí, deberéis comprobar si vuestro vehículo es compatible. Aunque Apple asegura que más de 200 modelos son compatibles, hay que tener en cuenta que no todos los territorios reciben los mismo automóviles. En España, la cantidad de coches compatibles se establece en más de 100.

Si tu coche es compatible, podrás conectar tu iPhone utilizando un cable de conector Lightning a USB o vía Bluetooth. Dependerá del modelo de automóvil que puedas usar la opción inalámbrica. Por cable, la conexión será más o menos inmediata. Si no se lanza instantáneamente, bastará con pulsar el icono en la pantalla del salpicadero. Desde Apple recomiendan utilizar los accesorios oficiales creados por ellos. Por Bluetooth, quizá tengas que forzar la conexión en la configuración de CarPlay, buscándolo en  el apartado Coches disponibles. Igualmente, si no se lanza automáticamente bastará con que pulses en el icono.

Si tu coche no es compatible, es más complicado. Como ya hemos mencionado, no existe una app CarPlay independiente que transforme tu iPhone como sí lo hace Android Auto. Esto no significa que no haya más opciones, pero requiere que gastes más dinero. Algunos fabricantes como Sony, JVC o Pioneer ofrecen equipos estéreo con pantalla integrada y compatibilidad con CarPlay. Las puedes colocar en el salpicadero y conectarlas a tu iPhone. El resultado será, básicamente, el mismo que si tu coche fuese compatible. Como contra, el precio variará desde los 375 euros hasta más de 1000 euros según el modelo y el fabricante.

Activating CarPlay: step by step

The first thing you need to do to use CarPlay is to check that your iPhone is compatible. It will be if you have any of the following models: iPhone 5, iPhone 5, iPhone 6, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Also, your operating system should be iOS 7.1 or higher. In any of these models you should be able to upgrade to higher versions of the system.

To check if you meet this requirement, access the Settings on your iPhone. Then look for the General category, click on Information and download until you find the Version data. If the number is 7.1 or higher, you can use CarPlay without problems. If it is inferior, you have an Android phone or a Windows Phone, you can not.

Siri, the Apple virtual assistant, must be enabled. To do this, go to Settings, enter General and activate it under the Siri category. Given control by voice commands, from Apple require its use. In addition to this option, you can use the touch screen or physical buttons to handle CarPlay.

You do not need to install any app, nor does it seem that Apple plans to offer something like that. CarPlay is an option within your iPhone, whose configuration you can access by going to Settings, entering the General category and looking for the section of CarPlay.

How to use CarPlay

From here, you should check if your vehicle is compatible. Although Apple claims that more than 200 models are compatible, it should be noted that not all territories receive the same cars. In Spain, the number of compatible cars is set at more than 100.

If your car is compatible, you can connect your iPhone using a Lightning to USB connector cable or via Bluetooth. It will depend on the car model that you can use the wireless option. By cable, the connection will be more or less immediate. If it is not launched instantly, simply press the icon on the screen of the dashboard. From Apple they recommend to use the official accessories created by them. For Bluetooth, you may have to force the connection in the CarPlay configuration by looking for it in the Available Cars section. Likewise, if you do not launch automatically, you will simply have to click on the icon.

If your car is not compatible, it is more complicated. As mentioned, there is no separate CarPlay app that turns your iPhone as Android Auto does. This does not mean that there are no more options, but it requires you to spend more money. Some manufacturers like Sony, JVC or Pioneer offer stereo equipment with integrated screen and compatibility with CarPlay. You can place them on the dashboard and connect them to your iPhone. The result will basically be the same as if your car was compatible. As against, the price will vary from 375 euros to more than 1000 euros depending on the model and the manufacturer.
