Será a principios de 2017 cuando llegue al mercado español el smart forfour electric drive 2017. Se trata de la versión con motor eléctrico del forfour 2015, un coche que pudimos probar y que es uno de los referentes entre los microurbanos de cuatro plazas, si bien su precio es algo elevado.

Esta variante, presentada en el Salón de París, se mueve gracias a un motor eléctrico de 82 CV de potencia, que toma su energía de una batería de iones de litio con 17,6 kWh de capacidad que son suficientes para recorrer hasta 155 km sin tener que parar a enchufarlo.

Para completar la recarga de las baterías, empleando una toma de corriente convencional se tarda hasta 6 horas, pero si se instala un Wallbox (una toma especial, con mayor potencial, pero que requiere instalación). Junto con el coche se lanza también la smart control App, una aplicación para teléfonos móviles desde la que es posible consultar el estado del proceso de carga y también programarla.

Hay diferencias en las prestaciones respecto del modelo movido por gasolina, obviamente. El smart forfour electric drive anuncia una aceleración de 0 a 100 km/h en 12,7 segundos y alcanza 130 km/h de velocidad máxima (limitada electronicamente)… pero es menor todavía si se activa el modo de conducción ECO, pensado para reducir el consumo y que además de bajr la velocidad que puede alcanzar el coche, la respuesta al acelerador es más calmada.

Fabricado junto al resto de versiones de combustión en la fábrica de Renault-Daimler en Novo Mesto, Eslovaquia, el smart forfour electric drive 2017 tiene muy pocas diferencias estéticas con estos.
