Viajar con la mascota en el auto es una práctica común entre los conductores. Sin embargo, la mayoría no toma las medidas de seguridad necesarias al llevarlos a bordo.

Ni el Reglamento Nacional de Tránsito, ni la Ley de Protección y Bienestar Animal establecen normas que regulen el correcto transporte de mascotas en un vehículo particular. No obstante, es el deber de cada conductor tomar conciencia del riesgo que implica no asegurarlos debidamente antes de cada viaje.

No contamos con estadísticas sobre accidentes vehiculares ocasionados por transportar animales sin las prevenciones correspondientes. Pero hay que tener en claro que este es un tema que involucra no solo la integridad del animal, sino también, la del conductor y los pasajeros.

Una mascota puede causar distracción al volante tanto como un celular. De igual forma, un animal que viaja sin ningún tipo de protección o sujeción en el habitáculo puede quedar malherido en un accidente de tránsito. Entonces, ¿cómo viajar seguro con tu mascota? Atento a estos consejos.

Usa su caja de transporte

Para muchos, transportar animales sueltos en el vehículo debe ser considerada una acción temeraria. Asimismo, estudios en Europa han demostrado que, en una colisión, el animal puede incrementar su peso hasta 25 veces e impactar contra el conductor con la fuerza de una tonelada.

Por esta razón, es recomendable llevar a la mascota, si es de tamaño pequeño o mediano, en su jaula de transporte. El lugar más correcto para colocarla es sobre el suelo de las plazas traseras. También se puede optar por las sillas de seguridad, aunque no brindan las mismas garantías de protección que un transportín.

De esta forma, se evitarán daños mayores a los pasajeros y al animal en un hipotético accidente de tránsito. De igual manera, si el conductor viaja solo, se prevendrán desatenciones al volante.

Cinturón de seguridad

Si se trata de una mascota grande, lo mejor será usar un arnés especial para sujetarla en los asientos posteriores con el cinturón de seguridad. Existen arneses con un gancho exclusivo para esto. En todo caso, solo debes enganchar el cinturón de seguridad entrelazado con la correa.

Si tu vehículo tiene la maletera integrada al habitáculo, es mejor usar este espacio ya que es más grande y cómodo. ¿Es seguro? Siempre y cuando instales una rejilla que le impida a tu mascota pasarse a los asientos posteriores, sí.

Como mencionamos al inicio, la Ley de Protección y Bienestar Animal no estipula qué medidas tomar para llevar a tu mascota de forma segura en el auto. Sin embargo, el artículo 5 aborda el tema de manera general:

“Toda persona tiene el deber de procurar la protección y el bienestar de los animales, cualquiera sea su especie, evitando causarles daño, sufrimiento innecesario, maltrato de tipo físico que altere su normal comportamiento, lesión o muerte”.

As we mentioned at the outset, the Animal Welfare and Protection Act does not state what steps to take to take your pet safely in the car. However, Article 5 addresses the issue in a general way:

"Everyone has the duty to seek the protection and welfare of animals, regardless of their species, avoiding injury, unnecessary suffering, physical abuse that alters their normal behavior, injury or death."
