Historia del Volkswagen Golf: 42 años del rey de Europa
Elevado a los altares por unos. Denostado por otros. Así es el Volkswagen Golf, el mayor éxito de la industria europea de la historia, y que encabeza la lista de modelos más vendidos en Europa desde hace años. La primera unidad del Volkswagen Golf salió de la factoría de Wolfsburgo el 29 de marzo de 1974. Poco después, se pondría a la venta.
Muchos consideran al Volkswagen Golf como el primer coche compacto de la historia, el inaugurador del segmento C. En realidad ese honor corresponde al Alfa Romeo Alfasud, lanzado en 1971, pero fueron los alemanes quienes supieron explotar comercialmente la versatilidad de ese tipo de carrocería. Además era un coche fiable y duradero (yo mismo fui dueño de uno que vendí con 270.000 km).
En las siete generaciones del modelo siempre ha destacado por su equilibrio, aunque como verás, ha cambiado mucho a lo largo de estas cuatro décadas. Por lo que siempre ha destacado ha sido por tener una gama más que completa. Desde el mítico Golf GTI , hasta versiones V6, con tracción total, cambio de doble embrague, diferentes carrocerías… Siempre ha sido muy configurable según el gusto y necesidades del consumidor… amén de su disponibilidad económica, ya que nunca ha destacado por sus precios bajos (al menos en España). Así ha sido la historia del Golf estos 40 primeros años de su vida:

Pongámonos en situación. Tras la crisis del petróleo, la gente demandaba vehículos de poco consumo. Volkswagen se veía ante el reto de sustituir a todo un icono, el Volkswagen Beetle, y apostó por un cambio mecánico drástico: motor frontal dispuesto transversalmente y tracción delantera, en lugar de propulsor y tracción traseras del Beetle.
Diseñado por Giorgetto Giugiaro, supuso el auge de las carrocerías hatchback, (compactos de dos volúmenes, con portón trasero). Disponible con tres o cinco puertas, pronto se unirían a el coches como el Ford Escort, Fiat 128, Opel Kadett… Todos exitosos, pero ninguno como el Golf. Apenas dos años después, ya se habían fabricado un millón de unidades.
Su motor más básico era un 1.1 de gasolina de 50 CV. También había un 1.3 de 60 CV y un 1.5 de 70 CV. Entre los diésel, uno de los más demandados era el 1.5 de 50 CV. En 1976, se producía el lanzamiento del primer Golf GTI, la icónica versión deportiva con la que Volkswagen introducía el dinamismo en el segmento compacto, con un motor gasolina 1.6 de 110 CV. Desde 1982 fue un 1.8 de 112 CV y ese mismo año llegó el Golf GTD, intentando repetir el fenómeno GTI con un motor turbodiésel).
El primer Golf Cabrio, por su parte, llegaba en 1979, fabricado por Karmann. En otros mercados se llamó Rabbit (como en EE.UU). o Caribe, en México. Esta primera generación del Golf se siguió fabricando hasta el 2010 en Sudáfrica, con muy pocos cambios.

Over the last 42 years, more than 30 million units of Volkswagen have been sold (the third best-selling model of all time, surpassing in 2002 the European model that had sold the most, Volkswagen Beetle (21 million units). 2015, when with 32,590,025 units sold, it became the best-selling European car of all time. One fact: a Golf is sold every 40 seconds.

In the seven generations of the model has always stood out for its balance, although as you will see, has changed a lot over these four decades. For what has always stood out has been to have a range more than complete. From the mythical Golf GTI (see Golf GTI history), to V6 versions, with all-wheel drive, double clutch change, different bodywork ... It has always been very configurable according to the taste and needs of the consumer ... in addition to its economic availability, since Has never stood out for its low prices (at least in Spain). Just two years later, a million units had already been manufactured.

Its most basic engine was a 50 hp gasoline 1.1. There was also a 1.3 of 60 hp and a 1.5 of 70 hp. Among the diesel, one of the most demanded was the 1.5 of 50 hp. In 1976, the first Golf GTI was launched, the iconic sport version with which Volkswagen introduced the dynamism in the compact segment, with a petrol engine 1.6 of 110 HP. 1979 Volkswagen Golf cabrio
The first Golf Cabrio, for its part, arrived in 1979, manufactured by Karmann. In other markets it was called Rabbit (as in the USA). The Caribbean, in Mexico. This first generation of Golf continued to be manufactured until 2010 in South Africa, with very few changes.
